Lao filmmakers invited to enter short video contest

The Department of Cinema of Laos’ Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism is inviting young people to put together a one-minute video about ways to counter the infodemic in relation to Covid-19.
As stated by the World Health Organisation, the Covid-19 outbreak and response has been accompanied by a massive infodemic - an overabundance of information including false or misleading information in digital and physical environments.
This causes confusion and risk-taking behaviour that can harm health. It also leads to mistrust in health authorities and undermines the public health response.
The Director General of the Department of Cinema, Mr Khamphao Vannavong, is advertising the contest on his Facebook page.
The winners will be awarded prizes and will represent Laos in a short video contest taking place in the Philippines next year.
Videos must be no longer than one minute long and can be in the form of a film, a short dramatisation, a cartoon, or some other format.
They should reflect the dangers of fake news posted on social media that has harmful influences on pubic wellbeing and safety.
The video should raise awareness of the risks caused by widespread dependence on social media. It should touch on safe and accurate forms of communication and the ways that misinformation can harm economies.
Videos submitted to the contest should be in MPEG-4 video file format and full HD.
They should not take the form of advertising or breach copyright in any way.
Entries must be in Lao with English subtitles and submitted by people aged 18-25.
Submissions must be accompanied by a completed application form and sent to the Department of Cinema.
Entrants may submit more than one video and applications will be accepted from now until July 29.
First prize will be 2 million kip, the second placed winner will receive 1.5 million kip, and the third placed contestant will receive 1 million kip.
More information about the short video contest can be found at www.laofilm.gov.la. Interested parties can also call 020 77511571 or 020 59962468, or email pednoy.yunho@gmail.com
