Q & A: Digital content marketing on social media

Social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp and WeChat facilitate speedy communications between people in all corners of the globe. They are also a new medium that can be used by people to sell their products. A number of people sell different types of goods every day on social media platforms.
Digital marketing is a key way to attract people to buy or sell products on social media. Vientiane Times interviewed Ms Phanida Xayavong, who has considerable experience in content marketing on social media.
Q: Can you please introduce yourself?
A: Hello, I am Phanida Xayavong and my nickname is Oa. I currently work as Co-CEO at HD Media Sole Co Ltd.
Q: How is content for digital marketing important on social media?
A: Creating great content is essential for digital marketing. People had plenty of time in the past to consume news and advertisements. They were attached to the TV screen for news, shows and advertisements, which they couldn’t resist. So, of course, the targets of the advertisers could be reached. However, things have changed nowadays.
People are now attached to the screens of their smartphones, tablets and laptops. They can take these devices everywhere and check for updates at any time. Moreover, people can choose only the content they are interested in and swipe away the ones that are not interesting. Therefore, I have studied individual interests, got to understand them and created content to meet the requirements of advertisers.
Q: How do you see content marketing in social media in general?
A: Mainly, I have seen many good marketing campaigns via Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram, and Youtube. There are many straight sell advertisements and tie-in advertisements – both work for targeting in general.
Q: Could you please share your experience in content marketing on social media?
A: I have been drawing comics for my Facebook page ຢາກແຕ້ມ& ຢາກເວົ້າ (Yak Tam & Yak Wao, meaning I want to draw and talk), and our mission for this page is to tell stories through comics with jokes. Mainly, we intend to deliver messages that satirise society in positive and entertaining ways. Initially, I didn’t see any potential to benefit from it but it happened because of my passion for drawing with my funny personality. One episode of my comic, named “Is it true that we’ve never been apart”, went viral. I drew it with my honest perspective of our current society. The episode hit 16,000 shares, and it made my page popular within a night. After that, I have been given many opportunities to improve, to draw more works, and to learn how to be a professional content creator.
Q: What should we do and what should we not do in the field of content marketing?
A: If you want to target the consumers of a product or a channel, you must know marketing strategies and then use the right ones. It would be easy to start with what you are selling or educating people about or reporting, and the target audience. The most important things for a content creator are being unique, creative and innovative. Do not be proud of copying others’ content but learn from their mistakes. Be consistent, focused and responsible for everything you create. I suggest everyone should put much weight on professional ethics. Do not create content that affects an individual’s emotions or is based on race and conflicts or is illegal. You better focus on reliable and up-to-date sources.
Q: Do you have any suggestions for content marketing?
A: The content creator works closely with mind-mapping, and one idea can lead to hundreds, and the creator is content with what she has or is interested in. Therefore, the creator knows who he is and what he likes, and it is the same as studying target consumers. Thus, the creator can be successful in the profession. My last but not least suggestion is that, even if it is your thousandth creation, do it as if it is your first one.
